Why Hair Loss Happens — And How to Take Back Control Naturally
Hair is tied to identity and confidence. When shedding increases or density visibly decreases, it can feel sudden and disorienting — even when the underlying cause has been building for months. Understanding why hair loss happens is the first step to addressing it with precision.
The Hair Growth Cycle
Every hair follicle cycles through three phases:
- Anagen (Growth) — active growth lasting 2–7 years; the longer this phase, the longer your hair grows
- Catagen (Transition) — a 2–3 week pause where growth stops and the follicle shrinks
- Telogen (Rest/Shedding) — the follicle rests for 3 months before releasing the hair and restarting
Losing 50–100 hairs daily is normal. Hair loss becomes a concern when the anagen phase shortens, follicles miniaturize, or shedding significantly exceeds regrowth.
The Root Causes
DHT & Androgenetic Alopecia
The most common cause of progressive hair thinning in both men and women. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) — a byproduct of testosterone — binds to receptors in genetically susceptible follicles, causing them to miniaturize over time. Strands grow progressively finer and shorter until the follicle stops producing visible hair. Blocking DHT at the follicle level is the primary intervention for this type of loss.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Hair is a non-essential tissue — the body deprioritizes it when nutrients are scarce. Deficiencies in biotin, iron, zinc, vitamin D, and protein are all associated with increased shedding and reduced hair quality. These are correctable causes.
Hormonal Shifts
Postpartum hormonal changes, menopause, thyroid dysfunction, and PCOS all disrupt the hair cycle. Telogen effluvium — a sudden, diffuse shedding triggered by hormonal or physiological stress — typically resolves within 6 months once the trigger is addressed.
Chronic Stress
Elevated cortisol pushes follicles prematurely into the telogen phase. Stress-related shedding often appears 2–3 months after the stressor — making the connection easy to miss.
Scalp & Lifestyle Factors
Excess heat styling, tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing, and poor scalp circulation all contribute to mechanical and inflammatory hair loss over time.
What Actually Helps
- Block DHT at the follicle — Saw Palmetto and Stinging Nettle are the most studied natural DHT inhibitors
- Nourish the follicle — Biotin, Fo-Ti, Horsetail, and key minerals support the structural integrity of the hair shaft
- Address nutritional gaps — iron, zinc, and vitamin D deficiencies are common and correctable
- Reduce scalp inflammation — anti-inflammatory botanicals support a healthier follicular environment
- Be consistent — hair growth cycles are slow; meaningful results require 3–6 months of consistent supplementation
